B9 - Respiration Flashcards
B9 - What is the word and symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
C6H12O6 + 6O2→ 6CO2 + 6H2O
Respiration is backwards photosynthesis!
B9 - What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose → lactic acid
C6H12O6 → C3H6O3
B9 - Explain why heart rate increases during exercise.
To increase delivery of oxygen to working muscles.
This will allow working muscles to respire.
Muscles will be able to contract.
To increase removal of carbon dioxide and lactic acid.
B9 - How does exercise affect heart rate?
Heart rate increases
Arteries to your muscles dilate (widen).
Oxygen and glucose supply to muscles increase
Carbon dioxide removal increases.
B9 - How does exercise affect breathing rate?
Breathing rate increases and you breathe more deeply.
You breathe more often
You bring more air into your lungs in each breath.
This increases the rate of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide removal.
B9 - How does exercise affect temperature?
Temperature increases.
This is because respiration is an exothermic reaction and some energy is lost as heat.
B9 - How does exercise affect glycogen stores?
Glycogen stores decrease.
Glycogen is converted back into glucose
This is to supply the cells with the fuel they need for increasing cellular respiration.
