B9 Respiration Flashcards
Is aerobic respiration an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Exothermic
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 +6O2 > 6CO2 + 6H2O
How can the energy transferred during aerobic respiration be used? (5)
To build larger molecules from smaller ones, enable muscle contraction, maintain constant body temperature, move materials during active transport, build nutrients into amino acids and then proteins
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
In the mitochondria
What are some of the bodies responses to exercise?
An increase in heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume, the conversion of glycogen to glucose for cellular respiration, an increase in the flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles
When does anaerobic respiration occur?
When your muscles cannot get enough oxygen for aerobic respiration
Why is lactic acid produced during anaerobic respiration?
Because the glucose is not completely broken down
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed to break down the lactic acid that has built up
What does lactic acid + oxygen produce?
Carbon dioxide + water
What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells
