B8 Photosynthesis Flashcards
Is photosynthesis an exothermic or endothermic reaction?
Endothermic
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water > glucose + oxygen
What is the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O > C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the process of photosynthesis?
- Carbon dioxide is taken in by the leaves, and water is taken up by the roots
- The chlorophyll traps the light energy needed for photosynthesis
- The energy is used to convert the carbon dioxide and water into glucose
Why are leaves broad and flat?
They are broad so they have a large surface area and they are flat so that the diffusion path is short
What is the purpose of guard cells?
They open the stomata so that gases can diffuse in and out
What is the purpose of xylem?
It brings water to the leaves
What is the purpose of phloem?
It transports sucrose and amino acids up and down the plant
What effect does the lack of light have on the rate of photosynthesis?
It slows it down
Explain the effect of temperature on the rate of photosynthesis
As the temperature increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases, until the enzymes denature. As the temperature decreases, the rate of photosynthesis decreases
What effect does the amount carbon dioxide have on the rate of photosynthesis?
The more carbon dioxide, the faster the rate of photosynthesis
What is the definition of a limiting factor?
Anything that stops the rate of photosynthesis increasing
What is the equation for light intensity?
Light intensity is inversely proportional to distance squared
How do plants use glucose? (5)
Converted into soluble starch for storage, used for respiration, converted into fats and oil for storage, used to produce cellulose, used to produce proteins
What do plant and algae cells need in order to produce protein from glucose?
Mineral ions, such as nitrate ions
