B8 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the 4 main uses of glucose
To build cellulose, starch. Make amino acids and make lipids
Why do plants use glucose to build cellulose
Cellulose is used to build up the cell wall so makes the plant stronger
Why do plants use glucose to build starch
Glucose is soluble, if stored it will interfere with osmosis and transpiration and so needs to be stored as starch
How do plants use glucose to make amino acids
They combine the sugars with nitrate ions and other mineral ions from the soil.
Why do plants make lipids
As am energy store and to strengthen the cells
Why are most leaves wide
Gives them a big surface area for light to fall on
Why are most leaves thin
Diffusion distances for the gases are short
