B8: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Why is photosynthesis endothermic?
It takes in energy
What is the function of chlorophyll?
It absorbs light energy
What is the word and symbol equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Low light intensity - no photosynthesis (no light for the reaction to take place)
High light intensity - high rate of photosynthesis (more light energy)
What happens when you increase one factor and it increases the rate of photosynthesis?
The factor was limiting
What are the 4 limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide concentration
Light intensity
Temperature
Amount of chlorophyll in the leaf
How can we increase the amount of chlorophyll in the leaf?
Give it more magnesium ions
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Low temp - not enough energy for reactions
Too high temp - enzymes involved denature, rate falls
What are the uses of glucose from photosynthesis?
Anaerobic respiration (release energy)
Insoluble storage (starch)
Converted to fats and oils (energy store)
Make cellulose for strength
React with nitrates from the soil to make amino acids, necessary for proteins
What is the purpose of greenhouses?
Increase light intensity, temp. and co2 conc. to increase the rate of photosynthesis
