B7: Non-communicable Diseases Flashcards
What are causes of non-communicable diseases?
Risk factors
such as life situations, genetics and the environment
What is correlation?
A link between two factors, but not concrete proof that one caused the other
What is a causal mechanism?
A scientific explanation as to how something could cause something else
e.g. carcinogens can damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer
What is sampling?
When a group of people are sampled for research on the population
To avoid bias, the sample needs to be as large and random as possible
What is cancer?
A mutation in DNA that leads to uncontrolled cell division, producing a tumour
What is a benign tumour?
Growths of abnormal cells which are contained in one area, usually within a membrane. They do not invade other parts of the body
What is a malignant tumour?
Growths of abnormal cells which can invade neighbouring tissues and enter the bloodstream and spread to other organs (secondary tumours)
(classed as cancer)
What are the risk factors to developing cancer?
Genetics
Lifestyle (e.g. smoking = lung cancer, UV light = skin cancer)
Ionising radiation (damages DNA, resulting in uncontrolled cell division)
What are major risk factors of non-communicable diseases?
Diet
Smoking
Alcohol
What diseases can poor diet lead to?
High fat can result in high cholesterol and increased risk of coronary heart disease
High in salt can increase blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases
What diseases can smoking lead to?
Cardiovascular diseases
Lung cancer as cigarette smoke contains carcinogens
What can decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease?
Exercise
What are the effects of smoking on an unborn baby?
Increases the risk of miscarriage and premature birth/ low birthweight
What effect does alcohol have on an unborn baby?
Fetal alcohol syndrome - child born with learning difficulties or other mental or physical problems
What diseases are more likely to occur when drinking alcohol?
Liver cirrhosis and liver cancer
Addiction and memory loss
