B7 Ecology Flashcards
What is competition
Resources are things that organisms are competing for
Organisms in a community are interdependent
Different species depend on each other for things like food , shelter, pollination and seed dispersal.
An increase or decrease in abiotic factors is a
Change in environment
A change in the abiotic factor could affect
The population in a habitat
Abiotic factors are non living such as
Moisture level
Light intensity
Temperature
Co2 levels
Biotic factors are living factors in the environment that affect
A population
Adaptations are key for an animal to
Survive
What are adaptations
Structural fearures that suit their envionment
What are types of adaptations
Structural - features of an organisms body structure such as shape and colour
Behavioural - ways organims behave .
Functional - things that go on inside an organisms body
Food Chains always start with a
Producer
Producers make their own food using
Energy from the Sun
Water Cycle
Energy from the Sun makes water evaporate from the land and sea.Water turns into water vapour.
Water vapour is carried upwards. When it gets high enough , water vapour cools.Condenses to form clouds.
Water falls from clouds as precipitation
Animals return water to the soil and atmosphere by sweat and urine
Water that isn’t absorbed runs off to streams or rivers
Cycle starts again
What is biodiversity
Is the variety of different species of organims on Earth or within an atmoshphere
Why is a high biodiversity important
Makes ecosystem more stable. As different species keep the conditions in their environment right for each other
Carbon cycle
Plants tske in CO2 from the aid during photosynthesis.Use the carbon in CO2 to make glucose.Glucose used to make carbon compounds e.g. carbohydrates
Eating passes these carbon compounds in plants to animals
Animals and plants respiration releases CO2 back into the atmosphere.
