What is a non communicable disease ?
A disease that cannot be passed from one person to another
When does a tumour form ?
When the sequence known as the cell cycle has lost control . When this happens the cells grow abnormal and in an uncontrolled way . This creates a tumour .
What are Benign tumours ?
Growths of abnormal cells contained in one place, usually within a membrane . It doesn’t invade any other part of the body .
Can a benign tumour grow large ?
Yes
What is a malignant tumour ?
These cells can spread around the body , invading neighbouring healthy issues .
What is a malignant tumour also known as ?
Cancer
What are most cancers the result of ?
Mutations and ionising radiation
What are the two ways to treat cancer ?
Radiotherapy and chemotherapy
What is radiotherapy ?
When the cancer cells are destroyed by doses of radiation
What is chemotherapy ?
Where chemicals are used to either stop the cancer cells dividing of to make the self destruct
What is the drug found in tobbaco smoke ?
Nicotine
Is nicotine addictive ?
Yes
What is the poisonous gas found in tobacco smoke ?
Carbon monoxide
What is a carcinogen ?
Chemicals that cause cancer
What can lead to a shortage of oxygen , leaving smokers breathless ?
Carbon monoxide
What is anathetisised when people smoke ?
The cilia
Where is the cilia ?
In the trachea and bronchi
What does the cilia do ?
Moves the mucus , bacteria and dirt away from the lungs
What does anethetsised mean ?
If something is paralysed
What happens because the cilia is paralysed ?
Allows dirt and pathogens down into the lungs which increases the risk of infection
What other toxic compound can be found in cigarretes and tobacco ?
Tar
What is tar and what does it do ?
A sticky , black chemical that accumulates in the lungs , turning them from pink to grey
What does tar cause ?
Makes smokers more likely to develop bronchitis
Are smokers more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease ?
Yes
What else does smoking do , something to do with your blood vessels ?
Narrows the blood vessels
If the blood vessels are narrowed , what disease is made more likely ?
Coronary heart disease
