A hormone is a chemical messenger.
Where are hormones released
from?
Endocrine glands
How do hormones travel around
the body?
blood stream
What do you call an organ which is
affected by a specific hormone?
target organ
HIGHER: What is meant by your
metabolic rate?
The rate at which the energy stored in
food is transferred by all the reactions
in the body.
Why is adrenaline important?
It is involved in the fight or flight
response to help protect you from
danger.
How long is the menstrual cycle?
28 days
What is meant by ovulation?
Ovulation is when the egg is released
from the ovary on day 14 of the cycle.
What is the order of the hormones
released/stages during menstruation?
- F - FSH is released from the
pituitary. - O - Oestrogen is released from the
ovary. - L - LH is released from the pituitary.
- O - Ovulation occurs on day 14.
- P - Progesterone is released from
the ovary.
What does FSH do?
It causes the follicles to mature.
What does progesterone do?
- Maintains the thickness of the uterus
lining.
- Inhibits FSH & LH.
What is meant by a ‘barrier’
contraception? Give an example and
advantage.
Barrier contraception prevents pregnancy
by physically stopping the egg and
sperm from fertilising.
Example: condom
Advantage: prevents STIs.
Give an example and advantage of
a hormonal type of contraception.
Hormone/contraceptive pill
Advantage: very effective
Disadvantage: side effects can occur
How does IVF work?
- A woman is injected with FSH and LH.
- Her eggs are collected and combined
with the man’s sperm. - The embryo is then inserted back into
the woman’s uterus.
How does clomifene therapy work?
- Used when a woman rarely/never
releases eggs.
- Clomifene increases the concentration
of FSH & LH in the blood.
