B5: Controlling Blood Glucose Flashcards
What two things control blood glucose level?
Insulin and glucagon.
What puts glucose into the blood from the gut?
Eating foods containing carbohydrates.
What removed glucose from the blood?
The normal metabolism of cells.
Vigorous exercise.
How and where is excess glucagon stored?
Can be stored as glycogen in the liver and in the muscles.
What happens if the blood glucose level is too high?
Insulin is secreted by the pancreas, making the liver turn glucose into glycogen - glucose moves from the blood into the liver and muscle cells.
What happens if the blood glucose level is too low?
Glucagon is secreted by the pancreas, making the liver turn glycogen into glucose - glucose is released into the blood by the liver.
What is diabetes?
A condition which affects your ability to control your blood sugar level.
Explain Type 1 Diabetes.
Where the pancreas produces little or no insulin, this means a persons blood glucose level can rise to a level that could kill them.
