B5 Communicable Flashcards
What is communicable diseases
They are caused by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses that can be pass from one person to another.
What are non-communicable diseases and example
They cannot be transmitted from person to another . He.h heart disease and arthritis)
What are the similarities with non and communicable diseases
They are both major causes of ill health.
What is a pathogen ?
a bacteria, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
What is health ?
a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
What is health made up of
Your diet , stress and life situation all majorly affect your health and well being
Who was semmeliws and what was his discovery?
He was a doctor in the mid -1850s and discovered that the fever was caused by and infectious agent and that when medical students should wash there hands .
Who was louis Pasteur? And what was his discovery
He showed that microorganisms caused desease. He developed vaccines against diseases such as anthrax and rabies
Who was joseph lister ? And what was discovery
He started to use antiseptic chemicals to destroy pathogens before they caused infection in operating theatres
What are the key methods to hygiene?
Hand washing. Using disinfectants , stopping cross contamination , keep coughing or sneezing to a tissue.
How does engulfing microorganisms protect you against disease?
Some white blood cells engulf (take in) pathogens , digesting and destroying the, so they cannot make you ill.
How does producing antibodies protect you against disease ?
Some white blood cells produce special chemicals called antibodies. These target particular bacteria or viruses and destroy them. You need a unique antibody for each type of pathogen. They can be made quickly if the pathogen gets in twice. This stopes you getting the disease twice.
How does producing antitoxins protect you from diseases?
Some white blood cells produce antitoxins. These counteract ( cancel out ) the toxins released by pathogens.
What is a virus
And example
They are very small
They live and reproduce inside other cells
Measles
What are measles
Symptoms include fever and red skin rash
Spread by inhalation of droplets
Very infectious
