B4.1 Adaptation to environment Flashcards
Adaptation to environment
Habitat
A place where organisms live (physical conditions and type of ecosystem)
Adaptations
Features that make organisms more suited to its environment and way of life
Abiotic environment
Non living conditions that exist in a specific habitat
Examples of abiotic environment
Temperature, water, sunlight exposure
Biotic factors
Living factors that impact an organism’s way of life
Limiting factor
Any factor that limits growth/distribution/abundance of a population (Biotic or abiotic)
Tolerance range
The entire range where a species can survive
Coral polyp
Small soft bodied animal that deposits a calcium carbonate exoskeleton for protection
Conditions for coral reef formation
Less than 50m water depth for light
7.8 pH or higher for calcium carbonate
32-42 parts/thousand salinity
Clear waters
23-29*C
Ecosystem
The physical environment and all organisms living there
Convergent evolution
When unrelated species experience similar selection pressure and similar adaptations develop
