Q

what was the major problem with the multi store model?

A

the STM is far more complex than suggesting in the model

the stores were described as single units

Q

what’s the difference between the multi store model and working memory model?

A

WMM explains STM as a more active process than the MSM

Q

what is the central executive?

A
‘supervisory role’
monitors incoming data
it focuses and divides our limited attention and allocates ‘slave system’ to tasks.
has limited processing capacity
does not store information

Q

what is the phonological loop?

A

a slave system

deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives

Q

what are the two subdivisions of the phonological loop and what do they do?

A

the phonological store - stores the words you hear

the articulatory process - allows maintenance rehearsal, capacity of the loop is two seconds worth of words you can say.

Q

what is the visio-spatial sketch pad?

A

a ‘slave system’
stores visual and/or spatial information
it has a limited capacity of about 3-4 objects

Q

what are the two subdivision of the visuo-spatial sketch pad and what do they do?

A

the visual cache - stores visual data

the inner scribe - records the arrangement of objects in a visual field

Q

what is the episodic buffer

A
a ‘slave system’
was added into the model later,
a temporary store for information, integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information processes by other stores and maintaining a sense of time sequencing.
limited capacity of 4 chunks.
it links working memory to LTM

Q

explain Shallice and Warringtons study

A

case study of patient KF who suffered from brain damage, impaired his STM, auditory information recall poor (damage to phonological loop) vs visual information recall unaffected (no damage to visuo spatial sketch pad)
