B4 - Theories of Exercise Behaviour Flashcards
theories of reasoned action (TRA)
focuses on predicting single-instance activity
ones intention to exercise
intention is determined by two factors 1) attitude and 2) subjective norms
theory of reasoned action
attitudes: positive and negative feelings toward performing a behaviour (eg. exercise)
subjective norms: expectations of others and motivation to comply with expectations
perceived behavioural control (PBC)
degree of personal control over ones own behaviour
account for many potential barriers to exercise
attitude, subjective norm, pbc –> intention –> behaviour
limitations to TRA
may be useful only for predicting behaviours that the individual perceives to be under his/her control
limitations to TPB
ability to predict behaviour is limited by elapsed time between the intention and the behaviour, as well as by the behaviours repeatability
transtheoretical model
- precontemplation (no intention)
- contemplation (intentions to start within the next six months)
- preparation (intention to start in immediate future)
- action (exercising)
- maintenance (exercising for six months)
motivational theories
- intrinsic motivation (motivation to engage in activity for its own sake)
- extrinsic motivation (ability of external rewards to motivate behaviour)
- amotivation (absence of motivation)
key idea of the SDT (self determination theory)
- self-determination
- competence
- relatedness/social interactions
personal investment theory
sense of self, perceived option, personal incentives —> meaning –> personal investment
