B4: skin Flashcards
epidermis
uppermost layer (made of five layers) contains keratinocytes, melanocytes, and langherans cells
keratinocytes
produce keratin (protein that protects skin from pathogens and injuries)
melanocytes
produce melanin (protects skin from UV radiation)
langherans cells
type of macrophage that assists in immune system activation
dermis
contains sweat glands, hair follicles, and blood vessels, as well as nerve endings (corpuscles)
tactile corpuscles
aka Meissner’s corpuscles; mechanoreceptors that respond to light touch
bulbous corpuscles
aka Ruffini endings; mechanoreceptors that respond to skin stretching
pacinian corpuscles
mechanoreceptors that respond to vibration and pressure
hypodermis
bottom layer of the skin. connective tissue between skin, muscles, and bones. contains adipose tissue for fat storage and insulation. also absorbs shock impacts
piloerection
aka goosbumps; raising of hairs of skin to trap heat in layer of air around the body
