B4: additional connective elements Flashcards
bone
living tissue that is vascular and innervated. protection of tissues, support of movement, storage of fat, and production of RBCs.
diaphysis
cylindrical shaft of long bones
epiphyses
wider ends of long bone
spongy bone
makes up epiphyses. contains red bone marrow
red bone marrow
found in spongy bone. site of hematopoiesis (RBC development)
yellow bone marrow
found in cavity of diaphysis. stores adipose (fat)
osteons
units of bone structure that are interwoven with systems of canals
Haversian canals
run through the center of each osteon, along the length of the bone
lamellae
concentric rings of bone matrix surrounding each Haversian canal
Volkmann’s canals
perpendicular connection between Haversian canals. contain blood vessels and nerve endings
lacunae
spaces between lamellae. store osteocytes
osteocytes
mature bone cells
osteoclasts
resorb bone matrix and release materials back into the blood
osteoblasts
reform and grow bones
calcitonin
secreted by the thyroid gland. stimulates osteoblasts to build bone when blood Ca2+ levels are too high
