B4 - Organising animals and plants Flashcards
How are substances transported to and from cells?
The circulatory system.
Composition of Plasma
Plasma carries SUSpended red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Also transports proteins and other chemicals around the body.
Main component of red blood cells
Haemoglobin that binds to oxygens to transport it from the lungs to the tissues.
[True or False] Blood is a unique tissue based on plasma.
True.
Function of white blood cells
Help protect the body against foreign entities and infections.
What are platelets?
Cell fragments that start the clotting process at wound sites.
What is clotting?
A series of enzyme-controlled reactions resulting in converting fibrinogens to fibrin.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four.
Ventricles pump blood ___ ___ the heart.
Ventricles pump blood OUT OF the heart.
Blood flow in the heart
Deoxygenated blood enters the heart through the vena cava
Goes through right atrium, ventricle, and then the pulmonary artery to the lungs
Comes back oxygenated blood through the pulmonary vein
Goes through left arium, ventricle, and then out through the aorta to distrubute oxygenated blood throughout the body
Deoxygenated blood enters the heart through the vena cava.
