B2 - Cell Division Flashcards
Where are chromosomes found?
In body cells, found in pairs.
[True or False] In plant cells, mitosis takes place throughout life in the meristems found in the shoot and root tips.
True.
What ability do many types of plant cells retain throughout life?
The ability to differentiate.
When do most types of animal cells differentiate?
At an early stage of development.
Embryo
A ball of cells, developed from a zygote.
Inner cells of the embryo
Embryonic stem cells.
Where can adult stem cells be found?
From adult bone marrow.
How are plant stem cells from plant meristems used for exotic plants (e.g.)?
To produce clones quickly and economically for research, horticulture, and agriculture.
Cloning exotic plants makes them relatively cheap and available for everyone to enjoy.
How are Embryonic stem cells used in the lab?
To understand how to body develops and heals, and how stem cells work.
[True or False] There are different kinds of stem cells that provide for different tissues.
True.
Stem cells are often ___, tough to ___, and difficult to ___ outside the body.
Stem cells are often RARE, tough to SPOT, and difficult to GROW outside the body.
What ability do embryonic stem cells have?
The ability to grow into any cell in the human body.
Uses of Embryonic stem cells
- Used to replace faulty cells.
- Create new cells that produce insulin for people with diabetes.
- Create nerve cells for people paralysed by spinal injuries etc.
Risk that comes with lab stem cells
Stem cells grown in the lab can become contaminated with a virus.
This could be passed on to the patient and make them sicker.
Where are plant stem cells found?
In the meristems, parts of the plant where growth occurs.
