-rejected scientism of US IR; believe states revolve around the concept of international society (sovereign states formed under conditions of anarchy);
interested in establishing a stable, international order
-key thinker bull accepted realism but proposed state behaviour can be made more cooperative through int. institutions that would create intra-state relationships
-criticism that it was a very Eurocentric view (discusses only english speaking states)
-promotes idea of peaceful coexistence
-pluralist approach: accommodate varying norms/culture of different states into a framework of coexistence based on respect of sovereignty
-solidarist approach: common values promoted including respect for human rights, solidarity, and humanitarian intervention in exceptional cases
