B4 Flashcards
Define Abiotic factors and give an example
Non living factors
- temperature
- light intensity
- moisture of the soil
Define Biotic factors and give an example
Living factors
- availablility of food
- number of predators
Define parasite
Live off a host, take what they need without giving anything back
What is a mutualistic relationship
A relationship where both organisms benefit
What do nitrifying bacteria do
Turn ammonium Ions in decaying matter into nitrates
What is a denitrifying bacteria
Turn nitrates back into N2 gas ( found in waterlogged soils)
What does a decomposer do in the nitrogen cycle
They decompose proteins and urea and turn them into ammonia which goes to form ammonia Ions
Define a community
All the organisms (different species) living in a habitat
Define a population
All the organisms of one species in a habitat
Define individual
A single organisms
Explain why the populations of predators and prey often change in cycles
The population of a species is usually limited and dependent on the amount of found available. If the population of the prey increases, then so will the population of the predators
Name 4 main processes in the water cycle
- evaporation
- transpiration
- condensation
- precipitation
