B3.1 Tissues and Organs Flashcards
Define a tissue.
A group of cells with similar structure and function working together.
Define an organ.
A collection of tissues.
Define an organ system.
A group of organs that all work together to perform specific functions.
What are the levels of organisation in a large multicellular organism?
Cells Tissues Organs Organ systems Organism
Give some examples of organ systems in the human body.
Digestive system, circulatory system, gas exchange system
Name some adaptations in some of the organs which make them more effective as exchange surfaces.
Increased surface area
Rich blood supply to exchange areas
Short diffusion distances
Mechanisms to increase concentration gradients
Is sperm a specialised cell, a tissue, or an organ? Explain why.
Specialised cell
It is a single cell
Is a kidney a specialised cell, a tissue, or an organ? Explain why.
Organ
It is a collection of tissues which have a specific purpose / role.
Is a stomach a specialised cell, a tissue, or an organ? Explain why.
Organ
It is a collection of tissues which digests food.
How has the stomach adapted for its role (digestion of food)?
It has muscular tissue to church food and digestive juices together, glandular tissue to produce the digestive juices which break down the food, and epithelial tissue, which covers the inside and outside of the organ for structure. These speed up the process and are tailored to help the stomach digest food quickly and effectively.
