B16 Flashcards
Define ‘predator.’
An animal that preys on other animals.
Define ‘prey.’
An animal that is hunted / killed by predators
Define ‘producer.’
An organism that can produce biomass for themselves (e.g. through photosynthesis)
Define ‘consumer.’
An organism that has to consume other organisms.
Why must material in the living world be recycled?
It provides building blocks for future organisms.
What chemical elements are recycled when animals and plants decay?
Carbon dioxide and mineral ions
Who uses carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and what for?
Used by plants for photosynthesis
Why is the water cycle important?
It provides fresh water for plants and animals on land before draining into the seas.
What is the role of photosynthesis in the carbon cycle?
Photosynthesis allows plants to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and make biomass to pass that carbon on to animals.
What is the role of respiration in the carbon cycle?
Respiration allows animals to release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. This carbon is then available to be used in photosynthesis, forming the base of the carbon cycle.
What is the role of combustion in the carbon cycle?
It allows us to release carbon locked away in fossil fuels in the earth while providing energy to power our appliances.
