B3.021 Hypersensitivity Flashcards
what parts of a history are most important in diagnosing immediate HS
symptoms, timing, reproducibility
treatment and outcome
concurrent exercise/meds/etoh
what are all the components of diagnosing immediate HS
history diet details/symptom diary physical exam skin prick tests intradermals
how is a skin prick test done
fresh foods used when available
histamine (pos control) - antihistamines in system already
saline (neg control) - hyper reactivity
define intolerance
your body cannot break down the food
small amounts -ok
define an allergy
your body mistakes the food for something harmful leading to an IgE-mediated reaction
immune response- localized or systemic
can be triggered by eating microscopic amounts
define sensitization
may not proceed to clinical disease
proven by IgE immunocap testing, skin testing, or oral challenge
how can you “outgrow” allergies
IgE production can die off if you don’t have repeat exposures
key cells of anaphylaxis
mast cells
basophils
mediators of anaphylaxis
histamine tryptase carboxypeptidase A chymase PAF prostaglandins leukotrienes other
target organs of anaphylaxis
skin resp GI CVS CNS
patch testing
test the possibility that a lesion was due to an allergic contact dermatitis
