B3: vaccination and immunisation Flashcards
who developed the first vaccine?
edward jenner
what do vaccines contain
a small amount of dead, weakened or inactive forms of a pathogen
what kind of diseases can they be made for
both viral and bacterial
how do vaccines work?
they expose our immune system to the pathogen so that they are able to destroy it, and remember it inorder to produce antibodies more quickly when there is a real infection
what role do memory cells have in the process of immunisation
the lymphocyte memory cells are able to remember the pathogen, thus are able to create complementory antibodies more quickly the next time around
what are some cons to vaccines
they dont always give full immunity to the infection. they can result in side effects, and we dont have them for every kind of disease
