B3 Infection and Response Flashcards
Pathogens
Microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
Can cause communicable diseases
Can infect plants and animals
Bacteria
Very small cells
Can reproduce rapidly inside your body
Make you feel ill by producing toxins (poisons) that damage your cells and tissues
Viruses
Not cells
Much smaller than bacteria
Can reproduce rapidly inside the body and make cells burst
Protists
Many different types
Mostly single-celled
Some are parasites
Parasites
Live on or inside other organisms
Can cause them damage
Often transferred to the organism by a vector
Vector
Carries a disease
Doesn’t get the disease itself
For example, an insect that carries a protist
Fungi
Some are single-celled, others have a body
The body is made up of hyphae, which can grow and penetrate the skin of organisms
The hyphae can produce spores, which can spread to other plants and animals
How can pathogens spread?
Drinking or bathing in dirty water (cholera)
Breathing in air containing droplets produced when you cough or sneeze (flu)
Direct contact with contaminated surfaces
