B3 Enzymes Flashcards
Define enzymes
Proteins that act as biological catalysts. They are made up of protein molecules made up of chains of amino acids which are folded into complex shapes that allow smaller molecules to fit into them.
Biological catalysts
increase the rate of chemical reactions in cells without being used up.
Active site
the place where substrate molecules fit
Features of enzymes
substrate specific (each enzyme only catalyses one particular reaction). Are affected by temperature and pH, the shape of the enzyme will change with a change of temperature or pH. If the change in pH / temperature is extreme, the enzy,e will become denatured and its activity will be destroyed
Denatured
when an enzyme changes shape so much that it cannot fit with the substrate
