B3 - Biology Flashcards
List three ways in conservation of the environment can be carried out
National parks, wildlife centres and zoos, protection of endangered species, more efficient engines to reduce emissions when burning fossil fuels, greater awareness of using alternative forms of energy (wind/geothermal) to reduce pollution from burning fossil fuels, recycling of household waste and reduce landfill
Name three fossil fuels
Coal, oil, gas
What is an organism?
An organism is a living thing
What is the difference between an artery and a vein?
An artery transports oxygenated blood away from the heart. A vein transports de-oxygenated blood back to the heart.
Name two features that are common to all arthropods?
Athropods all have a body made from three segments, an exoskeleton and a nervous system
Explain what we mean by the term habitat?
Habitat – a place where a species lives. A habitat is required to have enough food, shelter and protection to an organism. They also need a safe place for them to raise their young.
Explain what we mean by the term environment?
Environment – all the conditions that surround an organism.
What do we mean by the term community?
Community – all the populations of different organisms that live together in a habitat
Explain why the use of fossil fuels is causing problems for wildlife
They pollute the air, causing acid rain
