B3 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
the spreading of something more widely
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water from a high water concentration to a low water concentration through a partially permeable membrane.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the process by which dissolved molecules move across a cell membrane from a lower to a higher concentration
What is passive transport?
Passive transport is a movement of biochemicals and other atomic or molecular substances across cell membranes without need of energy input
What is Villi?
A small projection on the surface of a mucous membrane, such as that of the small intestine.
What is Alveoli?
any of the many tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange.
What is gaseous exchange?
Within the alveoli, an exchange of gases takes place between the gases inside the alveoli and the blood.
What is concentration gradient?
The process of particles, which are sometimes called solutes, moving through a solution or gas from an area with a higher number of particles to an area with a lower number of particles.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves.
What is xylem?
Transpiration is the process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves.
What are arteries?
any of the muscular-walled tubes forming part of the circulation system by which blood (mainly that which has been oxygenated) is conveyed from the heart to all parts of the body.
What are veins?
any of the tubes forming part of the blood circulation system of the body, carrying mainly oxygen-depleted blood towards the heart.
What are capillaries?
any of the fine branching blood vessels that form a network between the arterioles and venules.
What is ventilation?
The exchange of air between the lungs and the atmosphere so that oxygen can be exchanged for carbon dioxide in the alveoli (the tiny air sacs in the lungs).
What is Atria?
each of the two upper cavities of the heart from which blood is passed to the ventricles. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the veins of the body, the left atrium oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein.
