B3 Flashcards
What is a cell membrane?
• Allows movement in and out of the cell
What is a cytoplasm?
• Where chemical reactions take place
What is a nucleus?
• Containing the genetic information and control what the cell does
What is the mitochondria?
• Respiration takes place inside the mitochondria, supplying energy for the cells. Cells that have a high energy requirement e.g. Sperm cells, muscle cells and live cells, have large numbers of mitochondria
What is a ribosome?
- Too small to see under a microscope
* Ribosomes are in the cytoplasm and are the site of protein synthesis
What is a gene?
• A region of a chromosome that carries information that carries information about, and controls, a particular inherited characteristic
Describe how and who invented the structure of DNA?
- Watson and Crick used data from other scientists to build a model of DNA
- X-Ray technology data there were two chains wound in a helix, other data indicated that the bases occurred in pairs
