How have we saved the giant panda from extinction

  • symbol of the WWF since 1961
  • large area of forest are now protected, and hunting the giant panda is illegal
  • many pandas (61%) live in captivity
  • zoos around the world increase the population by breeding them, or exchange pandas for captive breeding programmes

  • the habitat is too small, so some birds are being ,over to other islands
  • there is very little genetic variation in the population so it would be vulnerable if there were any environmental changes
  • there is increased competition with birds on the island

  • baleen whale; eats small animals called krill, the whale sieves water through baleen plates in its mouth and traps the krill
  • toothed whale; have lots of teeth to trap food such as squid

A

A resource where if a few are taken, they will never die out. E.g. Whales, fish and trees. Oil is NOT a sustainable resource
