B2.6 Aerobic and Anaerobic Repiration Flashcards
1
Q
Where does respiration take place ?
A
Happens in the mitochondria
2
Q
What can the energy released during respiration be used for in plants and animals ?
A
- to build up larger molecules from smaller ones
- in animals to allow the muscles to contract
- in mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady
- in plants to build sugars nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids which are then built up into proteins
3
Q
What changes can occur during exercise and why ?
A
- breathing increases need extra oxygen
- heart rate increases because you need more oxygenated blood to your muscles
- Increased blood flow benefits your brain allowing it to function better
4
Q
What can glucose be stored in animal cells ?
A
Glycogen
Starch
5
Q
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration ?
A
Glucose+oxygen- carbon dioxide+water+energy
6
Q
What is anaerobic respiration and where does it occur ?
A
Where there’s not enough oxygen
Occurs in plants and cells and yeast
7
Q
Why do heart rate and breathing rate remain high after vigorous exercise ?
A
Because muscle cells respire more
