B2.3 Enzymes Flashcards
What happens when an enzyme becomes denatured?
The active of the enzyme changes shape and can no longer bind to the substrate.
What do enzymes control?
Chemical reaction rates.
If an enzyme is far enough out of its ideal condition, we say it’s been…
denatured
Is an enzymes shape important for it to work?
Yes, it’s vital.
Name the acid the stomach produces
Hydrochloric acid
What is Protease?
It’s used to pre-digest proteins in the making of baby foods
What is Lipase?
Used (with protease) in bio detergents to break down stains
What is Carbohydrase?
It’s used to convert starch syrup (clean) into sugar syrup (expensive) to use, e.g. in drinks
What is Isomerase?
It converts glucose syrup into fructose syrup, which is sweeter. Can be used in smaller amounts for same sweetness
Where in the body are the products of digestion absorbed?
Small intestine
How are carbohydrates digested?
Carbohydrates contain starch and starch is a large insoluble molecule. The enzyme amylase breaks down starch to produce glucose, which is a small soluble molecule. Carbohydrase is used to convert starch syrup into sugar syrup to use, e.g. in drinks. The digestion of starch is in the mouth and is also broken down in the small intestine and amylase is produced in the salivary glands.
How does bile aid digestion?
It emulsifyes fats and neutrailises acid from the stomach
Why do we need to digest food?
To break down the nutrients, otherwise we can’t dissolve and absorb it into our blood stream and it can damage parts of the body
