B2.2 Organisms in the environment Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water –> glucose + oxygen
What can limit the rate of photosynthesis?
Shortage of light, low temperature, and shortage of carbon dioxide
What can we use iodine solution for and why?
It reacts with starch. You can use it to see if starch is present as to show that photosynthesis has taken place (as a lot of the glucose from in photosynthesis is converted to insoluble starch and stored)
List the things plants use glucose for
Respiration, making fruits, making cell walls, making proteins, stored as starch, stored in seeds
What is an abiotic factor?
A non-living factor in an ecosystem
What is a biotic factor?
A living organism that has an affect on other organisms
What is an example of a biotic factor?
Disease, predators, mates, ratio of males and females
What is an example of an abiotic factor?
Temperature, oxygen content, pollution, water
What is traditionally used in greenhouses to increase the rate of photosynthesis and why?
Paraffin lamps - as well as generating light, burning paraffin produces heat and carbon dioxide
What are the advantages of greenhouses?
higher crop yields (more profit)
plants can be grown out of season (greater value)
stops lots of plants dying and losing income
What are the disadvantages of greenhouses?
can be expensive
cost of constant lighting and heating is high
needs constant maintenance
could increase water or electricity bills
What are the physical factors that may affect the distribution of living organisms?
temperature nutrients the amount of light the availability of water the availability of oxygen and carbon dioxide
How can you collect data on organism distribution
random sampling with quadrats
sampling along a transect line
What two things must be considered in fieldwork?
Validity and Reproducibility - variable are hard to control in fieldwork
