B2.2 Organisms And Energy Flashcards
How does oxygen move in the bloodstream?
It is carried by red blood cells that contain haemoglobin. The haemoglobin carries the oxygen.
How does the oxygen enter and exit the bloodstream?
Through diffusion.
What is the name for what happens in the alveoli?
Gas exchange.
Why does the heart rate increase when we excersise?
As the muscles need more energy to work, they need more oxygen. This means that the heart need to pump more blood around the body in order to supply the muscles with oxygen. Therefore, it pumps faster and our heart rate increases.
What is the word equation for Aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + Water
What is the work equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> Lactic acid (+ energy)
Where is lactic acid broken down?
In the liver
What is the world equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
What conditions decide the limiting factor for photosynthesis?
Light
Temperature
Concentration of CO2
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane.
How do root hairs take in water?
By Osmosis
How do root hairs take in minerals?
By active transport - they use energy from respiration to pull minerals against the concentration gradient.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the loss of water from a plant.
How can a plant lose water?
By diffusion and evaporation in the leaves.
How could you collect ground insects?
By using a pooter
By using a pitfall trap
