B2.17 Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

Why is it that during vigorous exercise, anaerobic respiration occurs?

A

We cannot supply enough oxygen to our muscles quickly enough. An alternative process is needed to break down glucose and release energy that does not rely on oxygen.

Q

Describe how a build up of lactic acid requires extra oxygen to break it down

A

Build up of Lactic acid is caused after exercise. A large amount of oxygen is required to break down the lactic acid know as oxygen debts extra oxygen is obtained by maintaining a high breathing rate and a high heart rate.

Q

Explain why breathing rate and heart rate increases with excercise

A

The more active a cell is the more energy it needs so respiration must happen at an increased rate. During exercise, muscles use up oxygen and glucose very quickly, blood supply to the muscles must increase.
