b2 organisation Flashcards
what are the levels of organisation?
cells -> tissues -> organs -> organ system -> organism
what is a tissue?
a group of cells working together to perform a specific function
what are the 3 types of enzymes and where can they be found?
amylase (small intestine, pancreas, salivary glands - in mouth), protease (small intestine, pancreas, stomach) lipase (small intestine, pancreas)
what does each enzyme break down?
amylase - starch & carbohydrates, protease - proteins, lipase - fats -> into fatty acids and glycerol
what is bile?
bile is produced in the liver and is stored in the gall bladder, it can also be released into the small intestine, bile breaks down fat and emulsifies acidic contents from stomach. it does this to help digest and absorb FATs, helping food components pass through the small intestine effectively. bile ensures fats are effectively digested so that they don’t disrupt the digestive process.
what do the 4 food tests test for?
starch/carbohydrates, sugars, protein, lipids
what is the food test for starch/carbohydrates?
using iodine solution, positive result is bluey-black
what is the food test for sugars?
Benedict solution- red, orange, yellow green
what is the test for protein?
biuret solution - lilac / purple
name the order in which blood travels through the heart and lungs
vena cava -> right atrium -> right ventricle -> pulmonary artery -> pulmonary vein -> left atrium -> left ventricle -> aorta
