B2: Organisation Flashcards
Factors affecting enzymes
-temperature - optimum in human body is 37 degrees
-pH (stomach)
Break down of starch using enzymes
Carbohydrase (e.g. amylase). converts starch into simple sugars like glucose
this is found in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
Break down of protein using enzymes
Protease (e.g. pepsin works at pH 1-2) breaks down proteins into amino acids
Pepsin is found is found in stomach whereas other proteases can be found in pancreas and small intestine
Break down of fats using enzymes
Lipase breaks. Down fats into fatty acids and glycerol
It can be found in the stomach, pancreas and small intestine
Statins
Drugs
Lower blood cholesterol levels
Cheap
Side effects
Stents
Insert a balloon and wire mesh to expand artery
Minor invasive surgery
Anticoagulant drops are required to prevent blood clotting
