B1L1 Skin Flashcards
The skin is what type of membrane
cutaneous membrane
what TWO layers make up the skin?
epidermis (outer) and dermis
What types of tissue make up the two skin layers?
epidermis - epithelial tissue
dermis - connective tissue
Epidermis vs. Dermis
epidermis - Epithelial, no blood vessels or lymphatics
dermis - connective, vascular
Describe the layer found under the dermis
Hypodermis “subcutaneous” layer - made of adipose connective tissue
Other names for the hypodermis
subcutaneous tissue or superficial fascia
Describe tension lines and their importance
“langer lines” - indicate the direction and orientation of underlying fibers
!! Incisions made parallel to tension lines have higher outcomes for wound healing and little scaring
Describe the two types of fascial planes
Superficial fascia - “hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue”, contains adipose tissue
deep fascia - white connective tissue, surrounds body and extensions divide muscles into groups
