B18 Cell Division Flashcards
Mitosis
nuclear division giving rise to genetically identical cells in which the chromosome number is maintained by the exact duplication of chromosomes (the cell makes a copy of each chromosome and divides)
Meiosis
reduction division in which the chromosome number is halved from diploid to haploid. Gametes are a result of meiosis (egg and sex cells). The cells produced aren’t all genetically identical. 4 daughter cells produced; each containing half the number of chromosomes of a normal body cell
When is mitosis used?
Used to produce normal body cells (e.g when growing or healing) or asexual production
When is meiosis used?
Used to produce gametes (egg and sex cells)
Reduction division of cells
The 4 new cells made in meiosis all contain half the number of chromosomes as the original cell
