B18 Flashcards
What changes can affect the distribution of species
Temperature
Availability of water
Composition of atmospheric gases
What is biodiversity
The variation of all different species of organisms on earth or within an ecosstem
What makes a good biodiversity?
A stable ecosystem which reduces the dependance on one species for food, shelter.
Should we maintain a good level of biodiversity?
Yes as we relay on it for our food source.
What activites do humans do to reduce biodiversity?
Throw waste into oceans, deforestation, global warming.
What happens when population and standard of living go up
More resources being used and more waste being produced
What does pollution contaminate
In water, from sewage, fertiliser or toxicchemicals
In air, from smoke and acidic gases
On land, from landfills and from toxic chemicals
Deforestation
Provides land for cattle and rice fields
Destroys ecosystems, release C02 from trees
Global warming
When average tempratures go up, the ice caps melt so sea levels increase, therefore more floods.
It will also cause more extream weather as hotter seasons become to hot leading to crops not growing so food production goes down. This evidance has been peer reviewed by thousands of scientiest
What do humans need land for?
To build buildings, farming, dumping waste
What is a peat bog
Peatlands and peat bog act as carbon sinks so they can asorb C02. They have a unique ecosystem, home to a wide range of plants, animals that have evolved to grow in acidic condidtions
What is peat used for
Peat is burnt as a fuel.
Used in garden soil as a fertilizer. This kills ecosystems and impact habitats
How is peat bog formed?
Wetland with lots of water and dying plants Takes thousands of years of plant material decaying
