B16 Ecology Flashcards
What is a habitat?
The part of an ecosystem where an organism lives
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring
What is population?
Organisms of the same species that share a particular habitat
What is community?
Community is made up of all of the organisms that share a particular habitat
What is competition?
Competition describes the fact that organisms often need the same resources
What is interdependent?
Interdependent describes how organisms rely on and impact each other
What are biotic factors?
Other living things that can affect a particular population
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living things that can affect a particular population
Give 3 examples of biotic factors
Pathogens/parasites, predators, interspecific competition
Give 3 examples of abiotic factors
Any 3 from light intensity, temperature, water/moisture levels, soil pH/mineral content, wind intensity/direction, oxygen availability and carbon dioxide levels
What resources do animals compete for?
Food, territory, mates
What resources do plants compete for?
Light, water, mineral ions, space to grow
