B16: Adaptations, Interdependence And Competition Flashcards
What is a community?
It’s made up of different species of animals, plants, bacteria etc that are all interdependent in a habitat
What are examples of materials that are cycled through ecosystems?
Nitrogen, water and carbon
What is interdependence?
The way in which living organisms rely on each other for survival, growth and reproduction
What is a stable community?
Where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant
What is an abiotic factor?
A non-living factor
What are some abiotic factors that affect communities?
Light intensity, temperature, moisture levels, soil pH, wind intensity and availability of oxygen
What are some biotic factors that affect communities?
Availability of food, new pathogens or parasites, new predators and competition
What is a biotic factor?
A living factor
What do animals compete for?
Food, territory and mates
What do plants compete for?
Light, water, space and nutrients
What do plants need to survive?
Light, carbon dioxide, water, oxygen and mineral ions
What do animals need to survive?
Food, water and oxygen
What is an extremophile?
Organisms that survive and reproduce in the most difficult conditions
What are examples of structural adaptations in animals?
Shape or colour of an organism
What are examples of behavioural adaptations in animals?
Migration
What are examples of functional adaptations in animals?
Reproduction or metabolism
