B1.5 Specialisation in Plant cells Flashcards
How does the root hair cells adaptation help it with its function?
Plants need root hair cells to take up water and ions, to help with this they have a large surface area helps with taking up water..It is also has a large vacuole which aids osmosis and the uptake of water. They have many mitochondria which helps with active transport which is moving ions against the concentration gradient requiring energy form respiration.
How are photosynthetic cells specialised to carry out their function ?
Photosynthetic cells absorb light energy and do photosynthesis. For this they have chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll which aids with photosynthesis.they also have a vacuole to keep them rigid.
How are xylem cells specialised to carry out their function?
Xylem is the transport tissue in plants that carry from the roots to the highest leaves and shoots. The xylem are alive at first and then die forming hollow tubes which is coiled with a chemical called lignin,This lignin makes them very strong and able to withstand the pressure f water.
How are phloem cells specialised to carry out their function?
The phloem transports carries food from photosynthesis. They have sieve plates which allow water to dissolve freely through them. They also do have many internal sub cellular structures, because they need to transport food , which is why they rely on companion cells to keep them alive.
