B15 Ecology Flashcards
Habitat
The part of the ecosystem where an organism lives
Species
This is a group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring
Population
This is the organisms of the same species that share a particular habitat
Community
This is made up of all the organisms that share a particular habitat
Competition
A word that describes the fact that organisms often nee dthe same resources
Interdependent
A word that describes how organisms rely on and impact upon each other
What resources do animals compete for?
Food and mates, predators compete for prey and prey compete for smaller food sources, in both cases males compete for females and to mate.
What resources do plants compete for?
Water, nutrients, sunlight and space to grow.
Extremeophiles
Organism that survive and reproduce in the most difficult conditions
Structural adaption
Features related to physical structure - shape, colour and size.
Behavioural adaption
Features related to short or long-term behaviours - migration, basking, tool use.
Physiological/functional adaption
Features related to processes - usually intentional, cellular processes.
Why must materials in the living world be recycled
To provide building blocks for future organisms
What chemical elements are recycled when animals and plants decay?
Returns carbon to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and minerals in the soil
Who uses carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and what for
Used by plants in photosynthesis
