B15 Ecology Flashcards
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living things that can affect a particular population.
How do moisture levels affect communities?
If there is no water, there will be little to no life.
After it rains, many plants grow quickly while water is available.

Which resources do animals compete for?
Animals compete for food, water, territory/a place to rest, and (most importantly) a female to mate with.
Which resources do plants compete for?
Animals compete for sunlight (which is the most important), minerals, and water, as well as space to grow.
What is an extremophile?
Organisms adapted to live in extreme environments.
What is a structural adaptation?
A structural adaptation is a physical change of an organism’s body, for example the thick fur of a polar bear.
What is a behavioural adaptation?
A behavioural adaption is an adaption that changes the way an organism behaves. An example of this is wolves hunting in wolf-packs.
What is a functional adaptation?
A functional/physilogical adaption is one that changes the way an organism’s body behaves, for example a camel storing fat (not water, but water is in the fat)!
