B15 - Dependance & Competition Flashcards
What 3 things do animals compete for
Food, territory and mates
Why is there competition for food
Many animals in the same environment eat the same plants and animals and so they must compete to be the one that has access to the food, normally the fastest or the strongest
Why is there competition for territory
For many, setting up and defending territory is vital, it could be used to build a nest or reproduce, and thus will keep them and their offspring safe
Why is there competition for a mate
Im many species, the male puts a lot of effort to impress the female, sometimes even fighting another male to show superiority. Also some birds have features to stand out
What 4 things do plants compete for
Light, water, nutrients and growing space
Why do plants compete
The plants compete for necessities to survive and grow and to produce offspring. Most need light, water, nutrients and space to be succesful
Plants needs for survival and reproduction
Light, carbon dioxide, water, oxygen and mineral ions
Animals needs for survival and reproduction
Food, water and also oxygen
Microorganisms needs for survival and reproduction
They need what both plants and animals need, but some don’t need oxygen or light to survive
Plants adaptations
Most plants find what they need such as water and mineral ions through the soil through their roots
Animals adaptations
Teeth depending on their food and adaptation to help them find a mate
Animals in cold climates
They have a very low surface area to volume ratio and so are relatively large, have plenty of insulation such as blubber or a thick fur coat. Or both.
Camouflage used by predators
So they can’t be seen when hunting
Camouflage used by prey
So they can’t be seen and hunted
Desert animals secrete concerntrated …
Urine
