B14 Flashcards
1
Q
Type 1 diabetes
A
Unable to prod insulin. Usually childhood, due to autoimmune disease (beta cells attacked).
Treatment = insulin injections.
2
Q
Type 2 diabetes
A
Receptors on target cells lose responsiveness to insulin. Usually obese adults/poor diet.
Treatment = regulate carbon intake, inc. exercise, some insulin injections.
3
Q
Where does insulin come from?
A
Genetically modified bacteria.
In future, use embryonic stem cells.
4
Q
Glycogenesis
A
Coverting glucose into glycogen. Catalysed by enzymes and occurs in liver.
5
Q
Glycogenolysis
A
Hydrolysis of glycogen to glucose. Occurs in liver (due to second messenger model).
6
Q
Gluconeogenesis
A
Creating glucose from other mols e.g. aa and glycerol in liver
