B13 Flashcards
In what ways to malaria parasites reproduce?
sexually in mosquito. asexually in host
D. Natural selection?
The process by which evolution takes place. Organisms produce more offspring then the environment can support, and so only those best suited to the environment survive and breed and pass on useful characteristics
What is DNA made up of?
Alternating sugar and phosphate sections - attached to each sugar is a base
What is each unit of sugar, phosphate and base known as?
nucleotide
What codes for an amino acid?
sequence of 3 bases
Order of bases controls?
The order of amino acids in a certain protein
What base is C always linked to?
G
What base is A always linked to?
T
What do non-coding parts of the DNA do?
Switch genes on and off
D. Mutation?
A change in the genetic material of an organism
What is gene expression?
when a gene codes for a protein that is synthesised in the cell
Possible positive mutations?
- producing a more efficient enzyme
- stronger structural protein
Possible negative mutations?
- altered protein that fold to give a different shape- enzyme active shape changes
- structural protein looses strength
