B10 Flashcards
Function of cerebral cortex
concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and language
Function of cerebellum
concerned mainly with coordinating muscular activity and balance
Function of medulla
concerned with unconscious activities, ie. breathing, gut movements and controlling the heartbeat
Where is body temp controlled?
hypothalamus
What does MRI stand for?
magnetic resonance imaging
Meninges?
protective membrane protecting the brain
How can scientists map regions of the brain?
- studying patients with brain damage
- electrically stimulating different areas of the brain
- and by using MRI scans
In bright light… (eye)
- circular muscles contract
- radial muscles relax
- pupil constricts
In dim light…. (eye)
- circular muscles relax
- radial muscles contract
- pupil dilates
Function of iris
controls amount of light entering the eye by controlling the size of the iris
Function of cilia muscles and suspension ligaments
change the shape of the lens to fine focus the light on the retina
Function of optic nerve
carries impulses from retina to brain
sclera?
white outer layer of the eye, which is relatively tough and strong so the eyeball is not easy to damage
Function of cornea
Lets light into eye, and curved surface is important for changing the direction of light rays entering the eye, so that they are focused on the retina
D. Accommodation
the process of changing the shape of the lens of the eye to focus on near and distant objects
