B1.2 Proteins Flashcards
Draw the diagram of a generalized amino acid

What is the general structure of all amino acids?
A central carbon atom bonded to:
- An amine group - NH2
- A carboxyl group -COOH
- A hydrogen atom
- An R group
What is the word equation for dipeptide bonds?
amino acid 1 + amino acid 2 –> dipeptide + water
Draw a peptide bond diagram

What are the dietary requirements of amino acids?
Our cells can only synthesise non-essential amino acids (11) and the essential amino acids need to be consumed via our diets
– a vegan diet may not be well balanced to fulfill this
Describe peptide chain diversity
There are 20 amino acids coded for in the genetic code, and polypeptides can vary in length and amino acids can be in any order.
What are examples of polypeptides?
Rubisco. insulin, collagen
Define denaturation
The irreversible change of protein conformation
What is the effect of high pH and temperature?
Causes denaturation:
Weak hydrogen bonds shaping the protein start to lose its shape hence, causing the shape of the aa to be altered and unable to perform its original function.
